Downs Syndrome is the cause of the presence of an extra chromosome number 21, which has not split. It does not just come from the Mother or the Father, it can be either. Most babies that are born with Downs Syndrome are born to women under the age of 35, as younger women have a higher fertility rate. In every 700 babies born, there is likely to be one with Downs Syndrome. Around 40% of babies born will have a Heart Problem-some cause few problems, but they can be more commonly of a serious nature.
Some children although not all will be born with a heart defect.
Atrioventricular Septical Defect (AVSD)
This is the most common congenital heart defect and is in the region of about 50% of the total.
Atrial Septal Defect ( ASD )
Fallots Tetralogy (Tetralogy of Fallot)
Persistent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)
Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)
